MASTER CLASS–WORKSHOP 1: Tennessee Williams scenes featuring Practical Aesthetics.

10 actors will be cast in scenes from Williams plays, and learn Practical Aesthetics* script analysis techniques by working on the scenes in class. Karen will speak on Williams’ life and works, and show clips from her documentary-in-progress, Tennessee Williams in the Mississippi Delta: The Love of Things Irreconcilable.

*Practical Aesthetics is the technique developed by playwright David Mamet and taught by him and actor William H. Macy to those who would found the Atlantic Theater Company in the mid-1980s. The technique is currently taught at the Atlantic Acting School’s New York University, conservatory, part-time and summer acting programs. Prominent alumni of the school include Felicity Huffman, Clark Gregg, Rose Byrne, Jason Ritter, Gina Rodriguez, Kristen Johnston, Simon Helberg, Jessica Alba, Eddie Cahill, Elizabeth Olsen, and many others.

WORKSHOP 2: Fearless Cold Reading

Based on her popular audition classes in New York City, this is a high-energy workshop packed with information and audition skills. Karen will show how on to apply Practical Aesthetics on-the-fly so its principles can focus your choices for audition material no matter how much or little time you have to prepare.  She will teach her 10-point cold reading system that helps actors:

  • make bold choices for the script
  • connect immediately to their partner/reader (and know how to work well with bad readers!)
  • share the  performance fully with their auditors
  • quickly assess the style and tone of the material

Karen will also show what to prioritize when there is little preparation time. BONUS: Karen will teach her signature technique, “How to enter the audition room” for confidence and ease on every entrance/exit.

TESTIMONIALS

Austin Workshops

“Karen is not only an expert on Williams and his work, she is able to help actors access his characters at the heart of the play’s themes. Her work with us made the roles completely human and simultaneously poetic. As an acting coach, Karen has a wealth of experience and invaluable advice about auditioning. I much look forward to working with her again.” –JOHANNA W.

“Karen’s steady guidance, instruction, and insights were like nothing I’ve ever experienced or heard before. I left that workshop so energized and inspired and with practical tools that transfer to both theater and film. Two weeks later I booked the lead in a national PSA for the American Heart Association and I attribute my success of booking that job directly to haven taken her workshop. I highly recommend this rare chance to study with one of the finest teachers in American theater today. Prepare to be inspired.”  –MAUREEN S.

Prior to taking Karen’s workshops, I had done some personal investigation into the Practical Aesthetics seeking to incorporate it into my own work over the years. It never seemed to really resonate with me, until I worked with Karen. As she teaches the Practical Aesthetics, her keen eye, her pointed questions, and her supportive critiques helped bring the application of this method home to me in a way I’d never expected. I left her workshop with an energy and excitement about the work that I had not gotten to experience since my days in graduate school and I feel that I’ve been gifted with a new perspective in my approach to the work – that can become all too elusive over the years.”   –LAURA W.
