Led by Sims Holland Improv is an indispensable asset for the actor, a great tool for development and self-discovery, and FUN! In this class, we will explore the fundamental improv skills of paying close attention and reacting honestly, the essential ingredients of compelling scene work. It’s not about thinking fast or being funny! This class is open to everyone, from actors who want to upgrade their technical toolkit to people with no performance experience who want to try something a little challenging (but FUN!) in a super-supportive environment.

Led by Jacqui Calloway, this class is designed for actors with prior training who are beginning their professional acting journeys, revamping their materials, or newly breaking into the Austin market. It covers headshots, resumes, demo reels, casting websites, and social media usage. We’ll discuss industry standards, look at professional examples, and provide feedback on students’ current materials. We will also dive into the technical elements of home set-up, camera technique, and editing self-tapes, as well as addressing the unique acting challenges that self-tapes present. We’ll end by discussing the logistics of getting an agent and sustaining an acting career in Central Texas or beyond. Calling all singing actors who move (but-please-don’t-make-me-do-the-dance-audition)! Led by Toni Bravo, this class will help get both of your left feet moving in the right direction on the foundation of basic steps used frequently in musicals. You will learn to combine the steps into combinations to help you move with fluidity and greater confidence. You’ll be armed with several strategies for memorizing combinations and for coordinating song, character choices, rhythm, and movement. You can do it. Toni can help. Give her six weeks and you’ll feel ready to take those steps you’ve learned and say “heck yes” to that next dance call.

Led by Adam Roberts, this class is intended for anyone desiring to increase the power and impact of his or her speaking voice. Training in healthy vocal production is an essential part of speaking intentionally in any situation, from the stage or screen to the classroom or boardroom. In this course, you’ll learn a variety of techniques for preparing and utilizing your natural voice to speak confidently in a variety of environments. The first few classes will focus on active exercises designed to healthily engage the various aspects of vocal production, while the final sessions will practically apply what you’ve learned to scenes, speeches, interpersonal communication, or presentations.

Led by Cliff Miller, this course introduces two exciting accents used for stage, film, television, and video games. Accents for the Fall: British (R.P.) and Scottish. Through Knight-Thompson Speechwork, a new standard-bearing approach to speech, students will acquire the skills to perform these accents convincingly. Areas of focus include developing the oral posture, learning how to create unique pronunciations, and analyzing the “music” (rhythm, tempo, and intonation) of the accent. Studies include native speakers of these accents, and dialogue from stage and screen scripts will be utilized to apply the work. This course is for actors with and without speech training and for people who enjoy learning two significant accents.

Led by Rosanna Pilcher, this course is for actors and curious individuals wanting to learn more about the world of voiceover. We will cover acting for voiceover, home studio setup, mic technique, and recording and editing. We will focus on commercials and narration by analyzing, performing, and critiquing voiceover copy. Led by Cliff Miller, VO II will focus on audiobooks this Fall! MUST HAVE HAD INTRO TO VO I OR PREVIOUS VO TRAINING BEFORE TAKING THIS CLASS. The course will focus on the acting skills and critical analysis necessary to interpret fiction books with the ultimate goal of getting underneath the text to the heartbeat of the story. We will cover speech clarity, breathing, pacing, character development, dialogue, descriptions, accents, and most importantly, how to effectively convey your specific point of view. To develop these skills, focused in-class exercises and out-of-class recording will be assigned. Audiobook selections from notable narrators will be studied. Also, reading materials and podcasts of industry experts will offer additional performance support. The course centers on acting skills and will only briefly cover auditions, recording technology, recording spaces, and casting. Audiobook production processes will be covered
in a later class. To take this class you do not need equipment, a studio space, or a “good” voice. You do need a love of stories, a willingness to practice, and a little bit of courage to show up and try new things.
