My Approach to Teaching:

Creating a safe space where students feel free to find awareness, investigate the human condition, explore, and be present in every moment is critical.  One of the most exciting aspects of studying acting is the ability to explore those places in ourselves that need a little boost: building confidence, public speaking, and learning to see ourselves in new ways.  We will explore on-your-feet learning through self and partnered exercises pulling from the teachings of Viola Spolin, Paul Sills, Uta Hagen, and Sanford Meisner.  From the basics of harnessing actor awareness through the senses to building backgrounds of Uta Hagen to understanding the natural flow of action/reaction, focus, and “the moment before,” with Sanford Meisner.  These techniques will bring your performances to life.

 

My Perspective on Training for the Industry

  • Continue training your craft of acting. This should never stop.  Use what you have learned whether you are just starting to train or if you have a flourishing career in the industry.  Continue to take classes, explore, and dive into new techniques.
  • Relationships relationships relationships: just like location is for a realtor, the quality of “the hang”  is essential.  Develop your network and continue to develop it throughout your career.
  • Use every experience or person as someone you can look at and learn from.
  • Go see theatre, film, TV, cable, web series, commercials. Listen to podcasts, voice-overs, and audible readings. You must know the industry to be successful in the industry.
  • Keep your industry tools: website, resume, headshots, and slates up to date.

 

Meet Kathryn Newbrough Osborne

Ms Osborne is a New York-based actor/director/teacher with deep Texas roots.  She started her career in Houston with Houston’s Shakespeare, Shaw, Jewish Theatre Festivals, and The Alley Theatre.  Kathryn has been an AEA, SAG/AFTRA performer for over 35 years and has worked in the arts and entertainment industry in the New York area working off-Broadway, off-off Broadway, and regionally in theatre.  She has worked in film, TV, cable, industrial films, commercials, voice-overs, and print venues.  Kathryn received her BFA  in acting from The University of Texas and graduated Summa Cum Laude with her MA from Calwell University in New Jersey.  Kathryn has studied with Eli Wallah, Jeff Corey, Joan Vail Thorne, Avra Petrides, John Basil, E. Katherine Kerr, Arethra Sills, and Tommy Tune. Kathryn is also a dynamic theatre director. She has directed and/or produced over 50 productions for children ages 5 to 90 in various venues, including local school settings, community theatres, regional theatres, and off-off-Broadway. Kathryn has written two plays that have been produced off-off-Broadway in New York.  She currently coaches acting privately for children and adults.
