My Approach to Teaching:
Get into the body, ground and come from a place of honesty.
Help students learn to listen to and trust their unique instincts while honoring what is on the page. Experimenting with techniques from Alexander bodywork, improv presence, environmental play, and Meisner, to name a few, we build the actor’s toolbox and find what serves each actor best to produce memorable, honest performances.
My Perspectives on Training for the Industry ~ as seen through the Uproot Fears/Unleash Stage Presence class:
Always observe, take notes, and get out in the arena.
There is no direct path to success in the industry, we forge our own by learning our unique style, voice, preferences and ways of learning.
Take classes, take other, different classes, be an extra, make a film, write a scene, submit it for something, share it with someone, make friends, work with those friends, work with strangers, get up on stage, start your own thing, drop what doesn’t work and dive into what does, take breaks, trust your heart, experience the world outside of your circle, expand, grow, grow some more, take a break when you need it, listen to yourself, celebrate your successes and the successes of your peers, just keep going.
Be fearless, persevere, and help your fellows along the way. We all rise together.
Meet Sims Holland:
Sims Holland, an original Austinite, began acting from an early age, attending the one and only Brite Lites Acting Studio here in ATX as a child. She was a proud Red Dragon Player at Austin High School, then went on to study Theatre at Tulane University, becoming the youngest student to be awarded their Dorothy Young Memorial Award for best performance by an actor. Sims continued her acting education in New York at AMDA NYC and on Off Broadway stages. Then trekked over to the West Coast to study a myriad of techniques, trades and categories of the acting arena in Los Angeles. She is a UCB graduate, studied Clown with Mick Barnfather, has stomped the stages of The Comedy Store and Laugh Factory with her stand-up comedy, and has more recently begun to garner awards for her solo show Learning to Human and celebrated its NYC Premiere on 42nd Street.
